The Passu Peak Expedition in Pakistan is one of the most sought-after alpine climbing adventures in the Karakoram Range, attracting mountaineers who are searching for a technically engaging yet relatively accessible high-altitude objective. Rising to an official elevation of 7,284 meters (23,901 feet) — though sometimes locally cited in older texts as 7,478 meters — Passu Peak is located in the Gojal Valley of the Hunza region, Gilgit-Baltistan. It stands prominently near the iconic Passu Cones and the vast Batura Glacier.

(Note: The Karakoram is an independent mountain range, distinct from the Himalayas, and is renowned for having the highest concentration of peaks over 7,000 and 8,000 meters on Earth.)

For climbers researching "Passu Peak expedition Pakistan," "Hunza climbing expedition," or "Karakoram alpine peaks," this mountain offers a perfect balance between serious technical climbing, breathtaking scenic beauty, and rich cultural immersion. Unlike the extreme isolation and weeks-long approaches required for deeper Karakoram peaks like K2 or Broad Peak, Passu Peak provides relatively easier access via the famous Karakoram Highway, while still delivering a formidable mountaineering challenge.

The mountain is known for its striking pyramid shape, steep ice slopes, and complex glacier-fed approaches. Climbing Passu Peak is a challenging endeavor that requires solid technical mountaineering skills, including ice wall navigation and crevasse rescue. It stands majestically above the Hunza Valley, offering climbers panoramic, unobstructed views of surrounding giants such as Shispare (7,611m), Ultar Sar (7,388m), and the expansive Batura Glacier system.

The Passu Peak Expedition is ideal for experienced climbers looking to advance their high-altitude skills while exploring one of the most beautiful mountain regions in Pakistan. The surrounding area is also a premier destination for high-altitude trekking—particularly the trek to Patundas Meadows—attracting adventurers from around the world. Combining a serious technical climb, dramatic glacier travel, and deep cultural exposure to the local Wakhi and Hunza communities, the Passu Peak Expedition is the ultimate, complete alpine adventure.

“Along the ancient Silk Road, every fortress, stone bazaar, and welcoming mountain hearth tells centuries of timeless history and vibrant living heritage.”

Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is Passu Peak to climb?

Passu Peak is a serious high-altitude mountaineering objective. While it is considered relatively more accessible than deeper Karakoram peaks like K2, it still requires advanced technical skills. Climbers must navigate steep ice slopes, complex glacier travel, and ice walls with crevasses. It is highly recommended for experienced mountaineers who have previously summited 6,000m+ peaks.

Is Passu Peak part of the Himalayas?

No. Passu Peak is located in the Karakoram Range, which is a distinct and separate mountain range from the Himalayas. The Karakoram is home to some of the highest and most challenging peaks in the world, including K2.

What is the exact height of Passu Peak?

The officially recognized elevation is 7,284 meters (23,901 feet). Note: Some older maps and texts may cite 7,478 meters, but 7,284m is the standard altitude used by modern expedition operators.

What are the main technical challenges of the climb?

The most technical section lies between Advanced Base Camp (ABC) and Camp 1, which features ice walls, crevasses, and seracs that require fixed ropes, ladders, and ice screws. Climbers must also be prepared for deep snow and high-altitude weather conditions higher up the mountain.

Do I need to have climbed an 8,000m peak before?

No, you do not need an 8,000m peak on your resume. However, solid experience on 6,000m to 7,000m peaks, proficiency in rock and ice climbing, and excellent physical fitness are absolutely essential.

What is the best time of year to climb Passu Peak?

The primary climbing season is June to early September. This period offers the most stable weather conditions, clearer skies, and warmer temperatures before the onset of autumn snows.

How cold does it get on the mountain?

At Base Camp, temperatures can range from 5°C to 20°C during the day, dropping below freezing at night. At higher camps and on the summit, temperatures can drop to -20°C to -30°C or lower, factoring in wind chill.

How long is the expedition?

A standard Passu Peak expedition takes between 30 to 34 days from arrival in Islamabad to departure. This includes travel days, the trek to base camp, the climbing period, and weather buffer days.

Do I need a permit to climb Passu Peak?

Yes. A mountaineering permit is required for peaks above 6,500m. This is usually arranged by your expedition operator. For peaks in the 7,001–7,500m range, the royalty fee is $500 per person during the summer season.

How do we get to Base Camp?

The journey starts with a scenic drive along the Karakoram Highway from Islamabad to Hunza (Gulmit). From there, a spectacular 3-day trek via Borith Lake, Passu Ghar, and Luzdhar leads to the Patundas Meadows before finally reaching Passu Peak Base Camp.

What is the altitude of Patundas Meadows?

Patundas Meadows sits at approximately 4,200 meters. It is a famous vantage point offering panoramic views of the Passu and Batura glacier systems and surrounding 7,000m peaks, serving as an excellent acclimatization stop.

How much does a Passu Peak expedition cost?

Prices generally range from $3,800 to $5,800 USD per person for a full-service 30–34 day expedition. Solo climbers or very small teams may pay a higher premium (e.g., $5,800+), while larger groups get better rates.

What is typically included in the expedition cost?

Standard packages usually include:

Airport transfers and hotels in Islamabad/Chilas.

Domestic transport (including the Karakoram Highway drive).

All trekking and base camp meals and camping equipment.

Porters for group gear and food.

What is NOT included?

International airfare to/from Pakistan.

Pakistan visa fees.

Personal climbing gear (boots, crampons, harness, etc.).

High-altitude personal insurance (mandatory).

Tips for guides, porters, and kitchen staff.

Personal expenses in cities.

What kind of gear do I need?

You will need high-altitude mountaineering gear, including:

Double mountaineering boots

Crampons and Ice Axe

Harness, helmet, ascenders, and belay devices

Down suit or extreme cold-weather clothing

Sleeping bag rated for -20°C or lower

4-season expedition tent (usually provided by operator for shared camps)

How fit do I need to be?

You need excellent cardiovascular fitness. You should be able to trek for 5–7 hours a day with a heavy backpack and carry loads at altitudes above 4,500m. Training should include cardio, leg strength, and practice hikes with a weighted pack.

Is rescue insurance mandatory?

Yes. Comprehensive travel and medical insurance that specifically covers high-altitude mountaineering and emergency helicopter evacuation is strictly required by all operators.

How is altitude sickness managed?

The itinerary includes a gradual ascent and acclimatization days (especially at Patundas Meadows and Base Camp). Guides will monitor climbers for symptoms of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) and will enforce rest days or descent if necessary.
