The Trango Towers are a group of dramatic granite spires located in the Baltoro Muztagh region of the Karakoram range in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. The highest of these is Great Trango Tower (6,286m) , which boasts one of the world's tallest nearly-vertical drops — its east face rises approximately 1,340 meters from the Dunge Glacier below.
The Trango Towers are a holy grail for rock climbers worldwide. The Nameless Tower (6,239m) , with its striking, needle-like profile, is perhaps the most famous, first summited in 1976 by Mo Anthoine and Joe Brown. The Great Trango Tower itself was first climbed in 1977 by Galen Rowell and John Roskelly.
This expedition is designed for experienced mountaineers and big-wall climbers. It requires advanced technical rock and ice climbing skills, high-altitude endurance, and the ability to operate in a remote, high-altitude alpine environment. The approach follows the legendary Baltoro Glacier to Base Camp, offering some of the most spectacular mountain scenery on Earth.
“Along the ancient Silk Road, every fortress, stone bazaar, and welcoming mountain hearth tells centuries of timeless history and vibrant living heritage.”

Arrival in Islamabad – Welcome to Pakistan
Most international flights arrive at Islamabad International Airport in the morning. Upon clearing customs, you will be warmly greeted by Hunza Adventure Tours Team and transferred to your hotel. The remainder of the morning is yours to rest and recover from your travels. In the late afternoon, once the entire team has assembled, we will hold a comprehensive group briefing covering the expedition plan, safety protocols, and gear checks. Depending on the time and energy levels, we may take a short tour of Islamabad, a lush, purpose-built capital established in 1961.

Flight to Skardu – Gateway to the Karakoram
Today, we head to the airport for a spectacular 45-minute mountain flight to Skardu, weather permitting. The flight is an experience in itself, offering breathtaking aerial views of the Himalayas and the Karakoram, including the mighty Nanga Parbat (8,126m). If the weather is clear, you may even catch your first glimpse of K2. (If the flight is cancelled, we will travel by road along the Karakoram Highway to Chilas). Upon arrival in Skardu, we check into our hotel. The afternoon is spent exploring the local bazaar, historic forts, scenic lakes, and ancient Buddhist rock inscriptions like the 8th-century Manthal Buddha Rock.

Skardu Sightseeing & Expedition Preparation
We start the day with a morning hike to the ruins of Kharpocho Fort. Built in the early 1700s, the fort offers commanding views of Skardu town and the Indus River—a perfect spot for photography. We will then walk through the Organic Village, where locals cultivate crops without modern chemicals. The afternoon is left open for you to finalize your gear, make last-minute purchases in the bazaar, or take an optional jeep excursion to the serene Satpara Lake.

Drive to Jhola via Askole – Entering the Wilderness
After breakfast, we load up the 4x4 jeeps and begin our rugged journey along the mighty Indus, Shigar, and Braldu rivers. We will stop for 1-2 hours in Askole, the last settlement before the wilderness. Here, you will meet our hardy Balti porters and witness their traditional way of life amidst apricot orchards and cornfields. Continuing our drive, we cross the snout of the Biafo Glacier and traverse a side valley to reach our first campsite at Jhola, situated along the Braldu River with impressive views of Bakhor Das (5,809m) and Paiju Peak.

Trek to Paiju – First Steps on the Trail
Today marks our first full walking day. We follow the riverbank before climbing higher to get excellent views of Paiju Peak. Be prepared for a few stream crossings; depending on the glacial melt, you may need to change into sandals to ford them. We will set up camp at Paiju (3,380m), a lush green oasis under the shadow of Paiju Peak (6,611m). From here, you'll get your first awe-inspiring views of the immense Baltoro Glacier and the granite spires of the Trango and Cathedral groups.

Trek to Trango Tower Base Camp – The Amphitheater
A short walk from Paiju brings us to the snout of the Baltoro Glacier. We will strap on our boots and climb onto this massive river of ice. The route is tough, navigating over undulating rubble and rocks left behind by the glacier. As we work our way across to the south side and follow the lateral moraine, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic. We take the left branch to reach the legendary Trango Tower Base Camp (4,900m). The amphitheater here is breathtaking, surrounded by Paiyu Peak, Uli Biaho, Mitre Peak, and the towering spires of the Trango Group and Cathedral Towers.

Acclimatization & Climbing Period
The next 26 days are dedicated to the ascent of Great Trango Tower. The non-guided climbing phase begins here. Our expert base camp staff, chef, and guide will remain at Base Camp to support you. The climbing period will involve multiple rotations to higher camps to acclimatize, route fixing on the sheer granite faces, and waiting for the perfect weather window to make the summit push. The schedule is entirely weather-dependent, requiring patience, teamwork, and expert judgment.

Trek back to Paiju
After an epic climb, we begin our descent, retracing our steps back down the Baltoro Glacier. Today we trek back towards Paiju. On the way, we must detour south to cross the Liligo Glacier, which has grown significantly over the years and blocks the direct route. We cross back to the north side of the glacier, descending past the ramparts of Uli Biaho to pick up the main trail leading to the green oasis of Paiju.

Trek back to Jhola – Celebrating with the Crew
Our final walking day takes us back down the Braldu Valley to Jhola. Now off the glacier, the air is warmer and thicker, making for a pleasant hike. The trail rises and falls as we cross alluvial fans and side streams. Upon reaching Jhola, we will celebrate the success of the expedition with our porters and kitchen crew. We will hand out tips and share a final meal and party together, expressing our gratitude for their hard work in getting us to the mountain and back.

Drive back to Skardu – Return to Civilization
Our vehicles will be waiting for us at Jhola. We begin our drive back to civilization, following the Braldu River through the dramatic Braldu Gorge. (Occasionally, landslides may require us to walk short distances while porters transfer bags). Once out of the gorge, the road smooths out as we travel through the fertile Shigar Valley. We arrive in Skardu in the afternoon, check into our hotel, and enjoy a hot shower and a much-anticipated dinner in comfort.
