The Greatest Museum of Shape and Form on Earth
Only superlatives can define the beauty and grandeur witnessed in this "sublime sanctuary of nature." Known as the most spectacular trek in the world, the traditional expedition route to K-2 (Chogori) 8,611 m—the second-highest mountain on Earth—cuts through the greatest concentration of some of the world's highest peaks.
Not only are these mountains high, but they are more jagged and sheer than the monoliths of Nepal. Eight of the world's 30 highest peaks stand around this extraordinary trek. The apex of this incredible journey is Concordia, one of the largest piedmont glaciers in the world. It is a spectacular junction of the Godwin-Austen Glacier, Abruzzi Glacier, and Baltoro Glacier. Its banks hold six peaks over 25,912 ft (7,900 m) within a short radius of just 7 miles (11 km).
The walk to Concordia, however, is not a task to be undertaken lightly. It is a hard trek up and down gorges, across rushing icy torrents, through broken rocks, over wire-rope bridges, and through crevassed glaciers.
The incentive for this strenuous walk is undoubtedly equally rewarding. Chongo Brakk, Mango Gusar, Sobla, Chiring, Bakhordas, Bardumal, Liligo, Paiju, the Trango Towers Group, Uli Biaho Towers, Mitre Peak, Muztagh Tower, Gasherbrum I, II, III, IV, V & VI, Broad Peak, Chogolisa, Golden Throne, Sia Kangri, Angles, Marble Peak, and the mighty K-2 are just a few of the innumerable mountain vistas to be witnessed on this trek—in addition to tranquil lakes, blossoming fruit orchards, meandering rivers, tumbling waterfalls, and undulating sand dunes, all with a unique blend of the modest Balti culture, marked by its distinct language, architecture, and dress.
“Along the ancient Silk Road, every fortress, stone bazaar, and welcoming mountain hearth tells centuries of timeless history and vibrant living heritage.”

Day-by-Day Itinerary (21 Days)
Arrival Islamabad
Arrive at Islamabad International Airport. Meet and greet by Hunza Adventure Tours representative, then transfer to hotel. After airport transfer, there will be plenty of time before lunch to relax at the hotel. Most international flights arrive during the morning. All participants will meet for lunch, which ends with a briefing about the trek and a Q&A session. This is followed by a short visit to the Tourism Ministry of Pakistan for an official and mandatory briefing about traveling to the northern mountains. Meanwhile, our team completes the necessary paperwork. If time allows, the twin cities can be visited — Islamabad is a modern capital city great for sightseeing, while Rawalpindi is a historic city built in the British era with intricate bazaars and bustling streets. Overnight at hotel. Altitude: 540m | Meals: Breakfast
Islamabad – Skardu (By Air)
Early morning air travel to Skardu (2,500m) . The one-hour flight (subject to weather) offers stunning views of Nanga Parbat (8,126m) , and before landing, the majestic K2 and other known peaks are visible if we are lucky. Some might even spot a part of the K2 Base Camp Trek route. After check-in at our hotel, the day is spent visiting the bazaar, historical forts, scenic lakes, or ancient rock inscriptions, including the 8th-century Manthal Buddha Rock that shows traces of Buddhist monks and pilgrims who influenced the area before Islam. Overnight at hotel. Altitude: 2,500m | Flight: 1 hour | Meals: Breakfast
Jeep Safari to Askole (3,000m) via Shigar Valley
Start the 7-hour jeep ride to Askole village, crossing the cold desert to Shigar Valley first. The last two hours' drive through Braldu Gorge was once a 2-day trek before the jeep road. In a few places, the road is intersected by streams, so only off-road vehicles are used. The roads are fragile to landslides due to melting glaciers and might require starting the trek a day earlier, but this rarely happens. If we reach Askole as per schedule, the first night is spent in the village under the beautiful sky along the rumbling Braldu River. Askole is a small village with few houses on a solitary street, home to several porters who have carried loads on the K2 Base Camp Trek more than 20 times. Overnight camping. Altitude: 3,000m | Drive: 7 hours | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Trek to Korofong (3,075m) via Biafo Glacier
The first walk for the K2 Base Camp Trek begins from Askole, the last inhabited village on the route to Concordia. Pass across local Balti people as they go about their work in their fields. Trek to the foot of the Biafo Glacier — the world's 3rd longest glacier outside polar regions and a door leading to Hispar Pass (and Snow Lake) connecting Baltistan to Hunza Valley. The snow river at the glacier's foot is stretched 63 km, with a bridge; without it, we would have to cross the glacier, which is boulder and rubble at the bottom. Our campsite, Korofong (3,075m) , lies across the glacier's other foot. The trees here are habitat to a variety of beautiful birds. Overnight camping. Altitude: 3,075m | Distance: 12.2 km | Time: 5 hours | Elevation Gain/Loss: 301m/290m | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Trek to Jhola Campsite (3,100m) via Panma Valley
From Korofong, gain altitude and follow the Braldu course until reaching the Panma River, which is crossed by taking a detour through a trail built on the face of the cliff. Before this trail, trekkers would climb giant cliffs and boulders to cross the high-velocity river. The trail is somewhat exposed in a few places but mostly wide. Go through the locally operated toll "suspension" bridge under government license. Until a few years back, a wire pulley was used — these pulley bridges, known as Jhola, were common in the Karakoram Mountains. Beyond this bridge is our campsite called Jhola. Overnight camping. Altitude: 3,100m | Distance: 8.5 km | Time: 3-4 hours | Elevation Gain/Loss: 229m/119m | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Trek to Paiju (3,420m) through Braldu Valley
Continue on the path, returning to the Braldu River. Pass a few campsites that are no longer used due to worn-out ground. The trek goes on to a narrow path along the river's edge, then climbs to a higher area from where we view the remarkable Paiju Peak. There are a few streams to settle, so wear sporty boots. From high points today, view the Baltoro Glacier, peaks of the Cathedral Group, and Trango Towers. On a sunny day, K2 can be seen half-hidden behind Lobsang Spire. Continue the trek to the central Braldu and walk to the trek's acclimatization site at Paiju. Acclimatization at this point is essential because ascending too high too hastily can lead to altitude sickness. Overnight camping. Altitude: 3,420m | Distance: 20.5 km | Time: 7-8 hours | Elevation Gain/Loss: 575m/334m | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Acclimatization & Rest at Paiju (3,420m)
Before heading for Concordia, Paiju camp has been designated as the acclimatization point, located at the foot of the Baltoro Glacier where the Braldu Valley widens. This is an important staging point with spring water availability. This camp has facilities such as long-drop toilets, wash basins, and a bathroom. The whole day is designated for acclimatization, and the porters bake bread for the climb up over the glacier. Those with spare energy can take a great hike above the camp for views of the Cathedral Peaks, the stunning Trango Towers, and K2 on a lucky day with a clear sky. Finding isolated pools good for swimming nearby depends on the course of the river in any month. Overnight camping. Altitude: 3,420m | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Trek to Khoburtse (3,795m) — Baltoro Glacier Trek Begins
A walk from Paiju leads upstream to the Baltoro Glacier, from where the melting water out-pours into the river. Ascend and walk on top of the glacier, which is rubble and rock. The team follows traditional trails, but it will be a tough walk on the mighty glacier. Create a path through the Baltoro Glacier and towards the south side, pursuing the moraine trails. Head east to continue along the glacier until reaching the glacier's smaller side. Move towards the south until crossing to enter the valley. Reach camp Khoburtse by night. Magnificent views of Cathedral Towers Group, Trango Towers, and Uli Biaho Tower can be enjoyed after a great trekking day. The Baltoro Glacier Trek can be demanding for many participants on the first day. Overnight camping. Altitude: 3,795m | Distance: 14.7 km | Time: 8-9 hours | Elevation Gain/Loss: 641m/221m | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Trek to Urdukas (3,900m) — Views of Trango Towers
Considering the increase in sleep altitude and being wary for all participants, we have a short trek day. Continue alongside the glacier, sometimes on it or above the moraine. Pass by the Trango Tower and the lonely peak "Nameless Tower" to our camp. This day's campsite was found and cleared by the K2 expedition of the Duke of Abruzzi in 1909. Climb around a hundred meters higher than the glacier to the terraces where the campsite is located. It offers a mesmerizing view of Lobsang, Trango Towers, Cathedral Group, etc. Reach here for a delayed lunch and spend the day resting. The K2 Base Camp Trek begins to pay off, providing grand views from Urdukas camp. Overnight camping. Altitude: 3,900m | Distance: 6.2 km | Time: 4-5 hours | Elevation Gain/Loss: 249m/39m | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Trek to Goro Camp (4,295m) — Sights of Masherbrum
Having enough rest at Urdukas, move eastward along the moraine until the point where we climb onto the mighty glacier. Go to the glacier's centre through a smooth flow and view Masherbrum (7,821m) . Going over and around the rubble on the mighty glacier, continuously descending and ascending, eventually reach to witness peaks surrounding Concordia and the great Gasherbrum IV (7,925m) staring down at us, while behind us are still visible the Trango Tower and the Cathedral Peaks as we move towards camp Goro (4,295m) . Sleeping at high altitude on the mighty Baltoro, it is essential to stay warm, especially at night. Overnight camping. Altitude: 4,295m | Distance: 12.2 km | Time: 7-8 hours | Elevation Gain/Loss: 329m/89m | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Trek to Concordia (4,500m)
The Baltoro Glacier trek to Concordia offers the greatest spectacles of the K2 Base Camp Trek. Continue the walk on the mighty Baltoro while passing Mustagh Tower (7,284m) and Gasherbrum IV, partially obscuring behind it Gasherbrum I (8,080m) — thus called "Hidden Peak." Spot it on the right side of Gasherbrum IV with fin-like ridges. Making our route up on Baltoro, views of Broad Peak (8,051m) appear while Marble and Crystal Peaks appear on the left. K2 remains concealed until the minute we reach Concordia — a breathtaking sight that becomes a beautiful memory forever. Concordia is a wide area of glacier and one of the greatest places on Earth. We will be surrounded by 4 eight-thousanders and 10 out of the 30 highest peaks in the world. Camp will be set at 4,500m in Concordia on the moraine. Overnight camping. Altitude: 4,500m | Distance: 11.8 km | Time: 4-5 hours | Elevation Gain/Loss: 289m/3m | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
K2 Base Camp (5,100m) & Broad Peak Base Camp (4,800m)
On this day of the K2 Base Camp Trek, start early through crevasses and small rivers created by melting ice. Follow the glacier named after Godwin-Austen, who first declared K2's height. After three hours, reach Broad Peak Base Camp, where we have a great sight of the astonishing K2, Mitre Peak behind us, and the Bride Peak. Walk on the moraine, which is mostly boulders, though we do walk on ice occasionally. After another 3 hours of trek, complete the one-way journey of the K2 Base Camp Trek, reaching a moraine safe zone — the traditional base camp area for K2 climbers.
One can also visit the Gilkey Memorial if time allows. The memorial has names of brave souls inscribed on plates and plaques — the tough ones who died attempting K2. Decisions about trekking to K2 Base Camp, Broad Peak BC, Gilkey Memorial, or choosing to rest at Concordia on this day depend on the participants. Return to Concordia on this day is compulsory. Overnight camping. Altitude: 5,100m (K2 BC) / 4,800m (Broad Peak BC) | Time (Return) K2 BC: 9-11 hours | Time (Return) Broad BC: 5-6 hours | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinne
Return Trek to Shachspong (4,100m)
Before heading down and allowing ourselves longer stages, take a final look at K2. Trek past Goro towards the campsite known as Shachspong. It is at a high elevation, making it a good viewpoint. K2 is hidden while Gasherbrum IV comes to prominence, and Gasherbrum I can also be seen. Going downstream, the Lobsang, Trango, and Cathedral are still far away. And beyond these lie the Uli Biaho and campsite Paiju. This is quite a fascinating place, and participants and crew members rejoice as they head back home. They sing and play anything that can be musical. Listening to their fantastic Balti songs at different camps on the K2 Base Camp Trek is a wonderful experience in itself. Overnight camping. Altitude: 4,100m | Distance: 16.2 km | Time: 6-7 hours | Elevation Gain/Loss: 31m/398m | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Trek to Khoburtse (3,795m) — Grand Views of Biale Peak
The descent on the Baltoro Glacier continues, and we get to see fabulous new views which are refreshing — even on the same route, the view is different. From here, the declining altitude is noticeable as the mountains start to gain height. The oxygen level and temperature are noticeable as we pass our previous campsite at Urdukas. The group takes a lunch break at one of the terraces, enjoying sensational views. Trek through the valley downstream on glacier, moraine, and along the glacier until arriving at Khoburtse. After many days, we set camp without the glacier beneath us. Here we can see the glacier's foot and plants at the base of Paiju Peak. You might notice that some camps on the K2 Base Camp Trek's downstream return journey are skipped. Overnight camping. Altitude: 3,795m | Distance: 13.9 km | Time: 6-7 hours | Elevation Gain/Loss: 99m/469m | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Trek to Paiju Camp (3,420m) — Views of Trango Towers
Our initial detour to the south is crossing the Liligo Glacier, which has expanded to meet the Baltoro, making it a difficult crossing without detour. Get a sight of the nameless tower of the beautiful Trango (6,239m) . The first summits on this tower were made in 1976 by Mo Anthoine and Joe Brown. "The Monk" is to the left, and opposite it is the Great Trango (6,286m) . In 1977, first summits were made by Galen Rowell and John Roskelly. Also in 1992, the highest-ever base-jump at that time was done by Glenn Singleman and Nic Feteris. Trek across the Baltoro Glacier towards the north, climbing on a glacier swell towards Uli Biaho's wall. Go downstream on the trail after crossing to the other side, passing the snout from where the cascade erupts to become the Braldu. The final trekking hour is a pleasant walk and an uphill climb to reach Paiju. These last days of the return journey are comparatively easy for many. Overnight camping. Altitude: 3,420m | Distance: 14.8 km | Time: 6-7 hours | Elevation Gain/Loss: 219m/639m | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Trek to Korophong (3,075m) through Panma Valley
Now at a lower elevation and not on the glacier, start early as the weather should be comparatively warmer. Leave camp and have a good walk until reaching the rising and falling alluvial fans. The group crosses streams formed by melting glaciers, which grow bigger with the rise in temperature during the day. Trek very close along the river at one time and along the Braldu River to the confluence with the Panma River. Going northeast, arrive at the suspension bridge. On the opposite side of this bridge, continue on the same route taken on the outbound trek, where "The Cliffs of Jhola" is carved on the rockface. Finally, a fine trail takes us to camp Korophong beside the Biafo Glacier, completing the second-last day of walking on the K2 Base Camp Trek. Overnight camping. Altitude: 3,075m | Distance: 29.7 km | Time: 7-8 hours | Elevation Gain/Loss: 452m/811m | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Final Trek to Askole (3,000m) past Biafo Glacier
Our last day of trekking is a return to civilization after a fortnight in the wild. Starting at Korophong, chase the moraine of Biafo, then along the river starting from the snout, reach the bridge for crossing to the north side. Move towards a cliff of rocks, a hurdle on the way to the direct route to the village, so progress down through the other end and go uphill to a plateau. Signs of habitation start to show with small valleys, nullahs, and irrigation channels that take water to Askole. Following this channel, reach farming fields and start to see stone walls. The team walks until the road ends at our campsite. The local porters rejoice at being united with their families, and we say our goodbyes to our new friends made in the wild. The long walks of the K2 Base Camp Trek come to an end. Overnight camping. Altitude: 3,000m | Distance: 11.9 km | Time: 5-6 hours | Elevation Gain/Loss: 298m/289m | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Jeep Ride to Skardu (2,500m) through Shigar Valley
From Askole, leave early in our vehicles that will be ready. First cross the Braldu Suspension Bridge and continue through Braldu Gorge. Landsliding is common, so changing vehicles is a possibility. If this happens, we will have to walk across the blocked area while porters transfer our baggage. As the road gets better, we near the Shigar Valley. The journey is smoother from here onwards as we go faster on the paved road toward Skardu. Once we reach Skardu, settle down at our hotel. Participants can take their time for showers and cleaning up, then we have dinner. We will have the comfort of real beds tonight. Overnight at hotel. Altitude: 2,500m | Meals: Breakfast
Fly to Islamabad — Sightseeing
The drive from the hotel to the airport is 40 minutes on a paved road. Board the plane for a thrilling flight towards Islamabad. Once again, fly by Nanga Parbat. Reaching Islamabad airport after a great adventure is altogether a very different experience and takes getting used to. Our vehicle will be at Islamabad airport to take us straight to the hotel. Settle in and have lunch if there isn't any unusual delay. After a good meal, participants can take the day for rest, sightseeing around the city, or shopping for popular options like artifacts or rugs. In the evening, we will be together to enjoy a special meal at a local restaurant or at our hotel. Overnight at hotel. Altitude: 540m | Meals: Breakfast
Contingency Day for Possible Delays
The Skardu to Islamabad fly zone is weather-dependent, and planes only fly when there is visibility for the pilot to land. The weather in summers is mostly good, but mountain weather conditions may change to bring rain. The alternative way is to go by road through the Karakoram Highway, which is a great experience. If we fly to Islamabad, the day can be used to rest and for sightseeing. The leaders of the trekking party will guide participants on this day with available options. Overnight at hotel. Altitude: 540m | Meals: Breakfast

Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the K2 Base Camp Trek?
Most K2 Base Camp treks range from 18 to 22 days, depending on the itinerary and whether you cross the Gondogoro La Pass. The trek itself (from Askole to Base Camp and back) typically takes 14-16 days of walking, with additional days for travel to and from Islamabad and Skardu.
What is the best season for the K2 Base Camp Trek?
The best season is mid-June to early September, with July and August being the prime months. The weather is most stable during this window, and the Baltoro Glacier is accessible. Outside this period, heavy snow and closed passes make the trek impossible.
Do I need a permit for the K2 Base Camp Trek?
Yes. The K2 Base Camp Trek lies in a Restricted Zone, requiring a trekking permit from the Ministry of Tourism in Pakistan. Your tour operator will handle the permit application on your behalf. Additionally, a Central Karakoram National Park (CKNP) fee is required, which is typically included in tour packages.

Is the K2 Base Camp Trek suitable for beginners?
No. The K2 Base Camp Trek requires prior high-altitude trekking experience and strong physical fitness. Beginners should not attempt this trek without first completing several high-altitude treks (above 4,000m) to build experience, stamina, and confidence at altitude. The demanding terrain, long trekking days, and high altitude make it unsuitable for those without prior trekking experience.
